The World Tree

The ceiba, also known as the World Tree, is sacred to the Maya. Often depicted on ancient murals and sarcophaguses, its central axis protects the Middleworld, separating the Underworld and Upperworld. Even today if the rainforest is cleared and decimated, any ceiba would be left standing. Otherwise, the worlds fall in on themselves.
